| Leeds | 3-3 | Charlton |
Already relegated Leeds United signed off in front of their home fans with an entertaining 3-3 draw against Charlton Athletic at Elland Road.
Eddie Gray's men, who were leading 3-1 with fifteen minutes to go thanks to goals from Matthew Gilgallon, Jermaine Pennant and Alan Smith, conceded two goals in the last fifteen minutes.
Smith - possibly playing his last home game for Leeds - started the match in vigorous fashion and was fed by James Milner on the left but his stinging shot was safely gathered by the Charlton keeper.
However it was Charlton who took the lead on 11 minutes as Matt Holland was teed up by Paul Konchesky and the midfielder let fly from 30 yards to beat Paul Robinson.
Konchesky could have doubled the London side's lead on 21 minutes, flashing a volley just wide of Robinson's goal.
Leeds almost grabbed an equaliser on 25 when Gary Kelly swung in a teasing cross which was met by the head of Stephen McPhail but Kiely turned the effort round the post.
The home side were in the ascendancy and drew level on the half-hour. McPhail curled in a free-kick from the left and Kilgallon stabbed home at the far post.
Frazer Richardson tried his luck from range before Pennant left Luke Young for dead in the area and planted his shot past Kiely for Leeds' second on 41 minutes.
The home fans gave their side a standing ovation at the break, which was thoroughly deserved as Leeds played the much better football in the first half.
The lively Smith - who was given the captain's armband - found some room in the Charlton box minutes into the first half but having manoeuvred himself into a good position he blazed over.
With Leeds comfortably holding onto their lead, a Mexican wave then took hold round Elland Road as the supporters again proved their commitment to a dying cause.
The home side were then awarded a penalty on 68 minutes when Michael Duberry was upended in the box by Jon Fortune.
Smith stepped up and, despite a valiant attempt by Kiely, slotted the ball into the net to score what might be his farewell goal at Elland Road to make it 3-1.
Charlton came back and Jason Euell forced a smart save from Robinson minutes later. Then, Jonatan Johansson ought to have pulled a goal back after Killgallon's hesitation at the back, but he planted his header wide of the post.
Alan Curbishley's side pulled a goal back on 76 from the penalty spot when Jason Euell was fouled by Duberry. Euell picked himself up and planted the spot kick past Robinson to ensure a nervy end to the match.
Leeds then fell apart and promptly conceded a third minutes later after some shoddy defending by McPhail and Duberry allowed Euell to grab his second goal of the match.
Milner almost re-established Leeds' lead with a snap shot before Pennant tried his luck from outside the area, but his shot narrowly missed the target.
At the end of the match, Smith was mobbed by his adoring fans but it is almost certain that the local hero will be wearing a different shirt next season.
