Leeds win 4-3 on penalties
Paul Robinson emerged as the hero as Leeds survived a Carling Cup scare to book their place in the third round.
Swindon appeared to be cruising as with just 16 minutes left they led 2-0 courtesy of goals from Bosman free transfer skipper Andy Gurney and Sam Parkin, a #50,000 capture from Chelsea.
But Leeds dug deep into their reserves of spirit and resolve and after Ian Harte had quickly equalised, Town then had keeper Bart Griemink sent off for his second bookable offence late on in normal time.
The drama was unrelenting as in the fourth minute of injury time Robinson pushed forward for a late corner to remarkably haul Leeds level.
Harte and Michael Bridges, marking his comeback after 10 months on the sidelines recovering from a ruptured Achilles, combined at a short corner.
It was the Leeds striker who whipped in a cross for Robinson to brilliantly power a header beyond substitute goalkeeper Rhys Evans and so send the game into extra time.
Remarkably, Robinson's goal was just as good - if not better - than that of Mart Poom's just four days ago when the Estonian number one scored with a bullet header for Sunderland deep in injury time against former club Derby.
It set up the penalty shoot-out, with Robinson saving a spot-kick from Stefani Miglioranzi to keep Leeds level at 3-3 and with just one remaining for each side.
Lucas Radebe then put Leeds in front before Gurney was left heartbroken as his last penalty struck the post, leaving Robinson punching the air in delight.
Just 90 seconds into the game, Leeds came came close to making the perfect start through Cyril Chapuis, on loan from Marseille and making his debut in place of the rested Mark Viduka.
Chapuis was sent clear by Alan Smith before unleashing a powerful left-foot drive which Dutchman Griemink just managed to tip away.
When Aaron Lennon, making his first start for Leeds at the age of just 16, jinked his way into the Swindon area soon after before setting up Smith for a horribly skewed shot, it at least looked like United would dictate the game.
But that was far from the case for by the 20th minute the Elland Road faithful had been silenced, and then come the half-time whistle the boo-boys were back in force.
Miglioranzi first saw a drive smothered by Robinson before eight minutes later finding Parkin with a slide-rule pass, but he curled a gilt-edged chance round Robinson and into the sidenetting.
Leeds could not find any rhythm, with injury added to indignity when skipper Gary Kelly was caught by an accidental elbow from Parkin as both went for an aerial ball.
It was clear the Republic of Ireland international was out cold, and after being attended to by physio Dave Hancock and club doctor Tom O'Shea, he was eventually led off the field suffering with concussion and with a gash over his right eye.
Kelly's departure led to Radebe playing in an unaccustomed right-back role and Smith taking on the captaincy, which suffered a disastrous start within five minutes.
Zoumana Camara's foul on Jon Stevenson resulted in Gurney thundering a 30-yard left-foot free-kick beyond Robinson, with the Leeds players stunned in disbelief.
Town's joy, however, was almost short-lived for a minute later Lennon produced a mazy run, but his firm drive was saved by the outstretched left boot of Griemink.
Didier Domi, on at the break for the ineffective Jason Wilcox, should have levelled matters within minutes of his introduction for after being set up by a combination of Harte, Chapuis, Salomon Olembe and Lennon, he skied a close-range effort over the bar.
A flurry of bookings followed for Swindon's Griemink - harshly for handling outside his area - Gurney and Matthew Hewlett prior to a roar of delight for the return of Bridges in replacing Chapuis.
He almost brought the house down within seconds of his arrival when after chesting down a Domi flick-on, Bridges found himself in space and rifled in a 20-yard right-foot shot which had Griemink beaten, only to strike the sidenetting.
In the 74th minute Swindon appeared to have victory wrapped up with Parkin latching onto a through ball from Sammy Igoe, splitting defenders Radebe and Camara with his run, before then lofting his shot over the advancing Robinson.
But within three minutes Leeds gave themselves a lifeline with Harte volleying home from seven yards before the late drama involving both keepers, with Robinson emerging with the biggest smile to spare Leeds' blushes.
