Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's 89th-minute header rescued a point for Manchester United after Mark Viduka's goal had looked like giving the visitors all three points.

The champions, who made an explosive start, looked like paying the price for some wasteful finishing when Viduka escaped the attentions of Mikael Silvestre to fire through Fabien Barthez's legs 15 minutes from time.    

But Ryan Giggs found space to float a ball over to the Norwegian super-sub who rose above Ian Harte at the far post to power his header across Nigel Martyn to deny Leeds their first win at Old Trafford for 20 years.

The home side could have gone on and won it but for Martyn clutching Dominic Matteo's header between his legs, and then producing a stunning one-handed injury-time save to foil Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

But United deserved their point even if it means they have equalled their worst ever start to a Premiership season - in 1992. Ominously for the rest of the pack, they went on to win the title that season.

Leeds, with Ferdinand and Matteo outstanding, will take succor, as they grew in confidence after a shaky start. Their biggest regret will be that they did not fully expose the soft centre of Manchester United's defence, despite the best efforts of Robbie Keane.

The pattern for the opening exchanges was set after just two minutes when Martyn palmed away a David Beckham free-kick that was destined for the top corner.

Van Nistelrooy, and Nicky Butt then squandered changes as Leeds struggled to get out of their own half, before Beckham's mishit shot bobbled across the face of goal and bounced off the far post with Martyn stranded. 

Leeds, holding firm at the back, started to come into it, but like their hosts, finishing was not proving to be their strongest suit.

 Kewell lashed over left-footed from the edge of the box before Viduka, spurned the best chance of the half.

The two Aussies combined beautifully but the latter could only find the side-netting from 12 yards after springing the champions' offside trap.

Apart from the lack of goals, there was a welcome lack of needle to proceedings but that all changed on the hour.

 Beckham cut down Keane and the Leeds striker responded by getting up and pushing the England skipper over.

Referee Dermot Gallagher restored order and booked Beckham, and let Keane off with just a caution - the handshake between the two probably the saving grace.

More controversy swiftly followed as Keane curled a cracking free-kick past Barthez home only for Gallagher rule it out because he had not signalled for the set-piece to be taken.

Barthez then denied Keane, after a mazy run from the Irishman, who promptly made way for David Batty, while Sir Alex Fergsuon threw on Solskjaer for Butt.

Handbags.... followed by handshakes

Viduka then claimed only his second league goal of the campaign - profiting from Silvestre's poor marking, and a marginal offside decision - but Solskjaer was on hand to spare the home side's blushes.
