Tim Hobbs reports

Leeds restored some order to their latest European campaign by finally overcoming the threat of Maritimo.

The Portuguese side had caused a stir by winning the first leg in Madeira, but crumbled as David O'Leary's UEFA Cup hopefuls enjoyed an Elland Road cakewalk.

Robbie Keane and Harry Kewell overturned the deficit before the break and Eirik Bakke added another in the second-half as Leeds at last showed they are taking this competition seriously after the criticism of their first-leg flop.

But the Premiership leaders once again failed to fire on all cylinders and despite Olivier Dacourt's return and Keane and Mark Viduka's industry, suffered infuriating spells when their passing was below par and their possession got nowhere.

Maritimo could even have plunged them into further trouble on 12 minutes as Brazilian Dinda forced Nigel Martyn to parry his thundering 35-yard free-kick and then get up quickly to block Quim's rebound with his legs.

But thankfully for a surprisingly large Elland Road crowd and the watching Sky Sports viewers it proved to be just a blip as the home side quickly cancelled out Bruno's freak free-kick a week ago.

David Batty fed Robbie Keane down the right channel and although two Maritimo defenders came across, a fortunate richochet fell perfectly for the Irishman to smash a fine effort high inside Nelson's near post.

Even then the outcome was by no means certain and it needed Kewell's third goal in two games to settle the nerves, the Australian planting a firm header past Nelso after compatriot Viduka had picked him out with a pin-point cross from the right.

The Maritimo keeper did well to keep out Ian Harte's deflected free-kick on the break before Leeds took control in the second half and came close on several occasions, Dacourt the closest with a rising drive that flew inches over.

Their persistence was rewarded with a third soon after though as Kewell streaked clear on the left, rifled in a low effort that Nelson could not hold and Bakke pounced to stab home the loose ball to add to his vital goal against Derby.

At 3-1 on aggregate the job was done. Maritimo's Briguel took his frustration out on Danny Mills' knee and was lucky not to be sent off, while Harte whipped the resulting free-kick just over again.

Keane and Viduka both wasted chances to add a fourth as their control let them down in the box but it barely mattered.

They may not have been at their best, but this time they were too good for the Portuguese - even if the rest of Europe is not quaking in their collective boots just yet.
