Minute by minute updates

Alex Sharratt reports

Danny Mills had a happy return to The Valley as Leeds United went top of the Premiership with a 2-0 victory over Charlton, who played for an hour with 10 men after Graham Stuart was sent off.

Robbie Keane's first of the season and a second half Mills rocket gave Leeds the points, though they should have scored more as they missed chance after chance as Charlton struggled to keep pace.

Not that Leeds boss David O'Leary will mind as his side went a point above Arsenal at the top and maintained their superb defensive record with another clean sheet.

Charlton's early season woe continued as they were forced to endure wave after wave of Leeds attacks following the dismissal of their captain for a two-footed lunge at Ian Harte.

The game had started at a frenzied pace, the action swinging from end to end without respite for the first ten minutes - and Charlton more than held their own with their illustrious visitors.

Scott Parker's header from a corner was athletically saved by Nigel Martyn in the Leeds goal, but O'Leary's men were a constant threat on the counter-attack, with the pace and skills of Keane and Harry Kewell a menace to Fish and Steve Brown.

And it came as no surprise when Keane netted his first of the season after 21 minutes, pouncing on a loose ball after Fish had elected to let the ball run back to goalkeeper Kiely.

The young Irishman - his place under pressure after his £12 million move from Inter Milan over the summer - kept his cool to lift the ball over the advancing Kiely and give his side the lead.

Keane was rarely out of the action and was the subject of The Valley's frustrations just before the half-hour mark when he appeared to be sent sprawling by the Charlton 'keeper, only for referee Mark Halsey to book him for diving - much to the annoyance of O'Leary on the sidelines.

But the pivotal moment came on the 36th minute when the Charlton captain Stuart was sent off for a two-footed tackle on Harte. The full-back was unhurt in the clash, but it was an ugly lunge from Stuart and exactly the type of challenge the FA are trying to extinguish.

The dismissal gave Leeds plenty of opportunity to utilise their pace on the break and the second half gave Charlton fans little to cheer as they failed to create any real chances despite having plenty of the ball.

Leeds remained patient and simply hit Charlton on the break - a tactic rewarded when full-back Mills crashed a 25-yard left-footed strike past Kiely, much to the annoyance of the home fans who had booed his every touch.

The goal confirmed Leeds' dominance, but despite chance after chance, the visitors failed to kill off the game, with Keane particularly wasteful.

Lee Bowyer - who had been almost anonymous in the first period - began making the late runs in to the box that brought him a hat-full of goals last season, but he too failed to really test Kiely.
