Jan Lammers first racing experience was in 1973 when he was 17. His godfather, Dutch racing hero Rob Slotemaker, asked him to drive a Simca for his team, Slotemaker Simca, in the Dutch Touring Car Championship.

Lammers won the title in his debut year and continued to race for Slotemaker Simca in 1974 and 1975. In 1976 he won the Dutch Touring Car title again, this time for the Opel Dealer Team.

Lammer’s ambition and love for single-seater racing led him to race in the European Formula Ford 1600 Championship in 1977. He shone in the series but left it to race in Formula 3; he became the European Formula 3 Champion in 1978. There was no stopping Lammers' success.

Lammers F1 dream was realised the following year, when he achieved his ambition to compete in the sport. In his first season he drove alongside Elio de Angelis for Team Shadow. An uncompetitive car meant that his debut F1 season failed to deliver the same success as his time in Touring Cars.

In 1980 he moved to Ensign and then ATS, where he never quite found his footing. Throughout 1981 there was uncertainty over Lammers' ability and in 1982 he found himself without a drive.

He competed in a few races for team Theodore, but at the end of the season was still no closer to securing a seat in a reliable car. His F1 career seemed to have been blighted with drives for teams where an inconsistent car never allowed him to show his true potential.

His career changed direction in 1985 after he signed for TWR Jaguar and competed in both the Sportscar World Championship. In 1988 he won Le Mans, also driving the Jaguar. Such was his success that he was congratulated by the Queen and also made an honorary member of the British Racing Drivers Club.

He continued to race with TWR Jaguar until 1992 when his second F1 opportunity, after more than ten years away from the sport, arose. March driver Karl Wendlinger was head-hunted by new team Sauber, leaving a March seat free with Lammers name on it.

He raced for March until poor finances forced the team to withdraw from the sport overnight at the beginning of the 1993 season. Next stop for Lammers was to be Tom Walkinshaw racing and the British Touring Car Championship in 1994. Post Walkinshaw, Lammers has varied his racing portfolio and driven in F3000, BTCC, GT and Le Mans among others.
