Alex Rae and Matt Murray were the Wolves heroes as Dave Jones' men beat Reading 1-0 to set up a winner-takes-all Millennium Stadium showdown with either Sheffield United or Nottingham Forest a week on Monday.
The 33-year-old midfielder fired home the winner eight minutes from time in this First Division play-off semi-final, second-leg tie at the Madejski Stadium, Live on Sky Sports.
Rae's low shot from 12 yards eased the nerves of the Molineux side who played out the remaining minutes to take the tie 3-1 on aggregate.
But Wolves keeper Murray also played his part in a famous victory with a number of fine saves, the best coming on the hour when he denied Darius Henderson from close range.
In a frenetic contest Reading's Jamie Cureton smacked a volley high and wide early on before Steve Brown was booked for an ugly tackle on Nathan Blake.
At the other end, Blake's cross was deflected by Brown onto his own bar before Murray pulled off another fine save from a downward header by Henderson.
Reading failed again after 66 minutes when Steve Sidwell dragged a 20-yard attempt wide before Glen Little scooped a shot over the bar from 10 yards after a fine one-two with Cureton.
But the night belonged to Wolves and the 33-year-old Rae who showed good close control before firing into the bottom left-hand corner of the net, as the visitors moved within one game of the Holy Grail.
