Pires opts for a knee operation
Premiership leaders Arsenal have signed a multi-million pound shirt sponsorship deal with British mobile phone operator O2.
O2 would not reveal any figures, but a source close to the deal said it was worth around £6-10 million over a two-year period. The deal is for four years, but will be revisited after two years.
Arsenal will use the "O2" branded shirts at the start of the 2002/3 season in August.
In addition to a club record sponsorship fee, Arsenal will also receive a percentage share of network revenue from jointly branded interactive mobile data and audio services.
Arsenal's vice-chairman David Dein welcomed the club record deal. "Both Arsenal and O2 are leaders in their own fields and, by joining forces, we have created a dynamic new partnership," Dein told the club's official website.
"It is also exciting news for our supporters who will benefit greatly from O2's involvement with the club through the introduction of many new exclusive and innovative services.
"Everyone at Arsenal is looking forward to a prosperous working relationship with O2."
Dave McGlade, managing director of O2 UK, said: "O2 is a European brand and Arsenal is a very successful club, with an international reputation and proven European credentials.
"Together, we believe we can perform at the highest level and go on to even greater achievements in 2002 and beyond.
"This partnership is financially beneficial to both parties, an enormous brand builder and, above all, great for the fans and customers."
