Great Britain made the most of home advantage as they saw off the threat from Sweden to reach the Speedway World Cup final.

With just one place in Saturday's final in Poland up for grabs, the British riders comfortably beat Sweden into second place with Russia pipping the United States for third.

Denmark have already qualified for the final and Sweden and Russia will race-off against the Poles and Australia in Leszno on Thursday for the remaining two places.

Scott Nicholls, racing on his home track at Coventry, led the scoring for the home side with a full house of victories but there were also outstanding performances from Edward Kennett and Chris Harris.

Greg Hancock won the first race for the Americans but was disappointing for the remainder of the night, while Peter Karlsson won Heat Two for Sweden.

From then on the British riders took centre stage, winning five consecutive heats amid plenty of thrills and spills which caused a succession of delays.

Sweden's Jonas Davidsson won three of his first four races, including Heat 12 on a joker to cut the deficit to just four points at the half-way stage.

However, with Antonio Lindback ruled out through injury after a fall in Heat Six, Davidsson had little support from his team-mates and further wins for Harris, Nicholls and Kennett extended Britain's lead to 10 points.

Former Coventry rider Leigh Richardson, who finished last in Heat One, improved throughout the night to take 11 points from his five rides.
