Anna Kournikova's dismal recent run continued but the Russian pin-up girl refused to bow out of this year's Wimbledon without a fight.

Kournikova lost 1-6 6-4 4-6 on a packed Court Two to her compatriot and 21st seed Tatiana Panova.

The one-time Wimbledon semi-finalist has now won only three of her last 15 matches but once she found her form after a dismal first set she threatened to snatch an unlikely victory.

The more consistent Panova broke Kournikova crucially in the seventh game of the final set.

But Kournikova continued to give her trouble with some delightful drop volleys at the net whose success she greeted with beaming smiles.

Panova had problems serving for the match and Kournikova failed to take advantage of three break point opportunities.

When Kournikova netted a simple forehand Panova finally managed to convert her fourth match point opportunity and move into the second round.
